I love this book. I can’t put it down, so this is only a partial review. But how can I not love a book with chapter titles like “The Fuzzy Quesadilla” and chubby teenage Alice (unable to take the Anglicized “Uh-lee-sha” as she puts it) finding her voice and countering her “FATSO!” shouting neighborhood taunter with “BOZO!” much to the street’s delight?
There’s so much to enjoy and identify with in here, from teen idols, Sun-In, learning about sex from Cosmo Magazine, not to mention Alice’s teen-hair experiments that have me alternately laughing and cringing. Casting a non-judgmental eye on her parents while she certainly could, our wise-beyond-her-years heroine finds herself in a remarkably creative place at the right time and that’s when all of the elements meld.
I won’t spoil any more of it for you except to say: get it!
