Watch Self Help Graphics’ Virtual Dia de los Muertos

Self Help Graphics pioneered Dia de los Muertos celebrations in Los Angeles, and has always been the most community-oriented. There are bigger and more elaborate celebrations, like Olvera Street and Hollywood Forever Cemetery, but to me, the artist-run Self Help has always had more heart. Watch this video to learn about the history and the meaning of the traditions, and to join in with this year’s 47th annual event, which is a virtual celebration. Hosted by Musician and Scholar, Martha Gonzalez and Singer, Actor and Activist, Annie Gonzalez of Gentefied (Netflix). Performers include Ceci Bastida, Tropa Magica, and Katzù Oso, and Danza Divina de Los Angeles, bringing music, dancing, personal stories and poetry into your home.

Self Help Graphics has collaborated with Grand Park to curate 11 altars (ofrendas), including the annual Community Altar created by Maestra Ofelia Esparza and her family. You can visit Grand Park’s Downtown Día de los Muertos altars, with a socially distanced audio tour, through November 4, 2020 from 5:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m. (park hours).
