Black Market’s Chile Rellenos

It’s our favorite event of the year! You know an event is good when you can just call it The Food Event and everyone shows up. This Sunday, October 20, Los Angeles magazine presents its eight annual Food Event at the bucolic Saddlerock Ranch in the Malibu Hills. There could not be a more perfect location than the large expanse of grassy meadow surrounded by sloping vineyards.

The afternoon event lasts from 2pm-5pm and features tastes from 40 of the best restaurants in Los Angeles as well as wine, spirits and special treats. Naturally you can expect pourings from Saddlerock and Semler. Restaurants we look forward to sampling include Allumette, Black Market Liquor Bar, Farmshop, FIG Restaurant, Little Sister, Lotería Grill,  Michael’s Santa Monica, Mo-Chica, Paichẽ, Picca, Public School 805,  Saddlepeak Lodge, Son of a Gun, Spago, Sqirl, and The Royce Wood-Fired Steak House.

Chef demos will be presented by John Rivera Sedlar of longtime favorite Rivera, Kris Morningstar of Ray and Stark’s, Sang Yoon of Father’s Office and Lukshon, plus David LeFevre of both the Manhattan Beach Post and the Beat’s new favorite, Fishing with Dynamite. And for those with a sweet tooth, Duff Goldman of Charm City Cakes and Duff’s Cakemix will be doing a demo. Bet it will have something to do with cakes!

Do wear flats so you don’t sink into the grass and the uh, barnyard “landscaping” in the parking lot. Yes, there are horses, and camels, and even zebras. Bring a camera. Must be 21 and older. No pets unless they are camels.

Tickets are $120, $125 including a Los Angeles magazine subscription, $130 with afterparty which will be held at Malibu Cafe at Calamigos Ranch. All demonstrations, food, beverages, and parking fees are included. Definitely a bargain for pure culinary decadence in a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.
