This weekend Chinatown brings in the lunar new year with a bang. And that’s not just the firecrackers. On Saturday 2/1 from Noon-8pm and 2/2 Noon-5pm the joint will be jumping.

As always, the highlight of the festival will be the 115th Annual Golden Dragon Parade (presented by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles), on Saturday at 1pm. You can anticipate food trucks, monkeys, acrobats, face painting, and a personal favorite – candy sculpture.

The West Plaza will be hosting arts and crafts and historical workshops for the whole family. Acrobats and kung fu performances will liven up the main stage at Central Plaza. Heavily anticipated acts include the dragon and lion dances and the teapot juggling.

There will be three stages plus bands playing on Chung King Road. Check out the LA Weekly stage while enjoying craft beer. Hobart W. Fink will be playing the Buzz Bands stage Saturday at noon. Don’t miss the 643 North Spring Street stage from 4pm to 10pm on Saturday right across the street from Caveman Vintage Music featuring acts like Princess Pangolin (5pm) and the Volcanics  (6pm).

Across Hill St. you will find the newest addition to Chinatown, Chung King Road, a row of contemporary art galleries such as Coagula Curatorial and Red Pipe. An additional stage of live music is being hosted there in conjunction with the Chinese New Year festival. We strongly recommend catching the Insect Surfers at 9pm.

Downtown Flea will be participating this year, with a host of vendors selling vintage and handmade products at 727 Hill.

If the trucks aren’t enough for you, we recommend Golden City, Hop Louie, Won Kok and – providing you can get a reservation – Starry Kitchen.

FREE ADMITTANCE. Don’t forget to wear red panties and whatever you do, don’t touch the monkey.
Complete schedules after the jump.
