On Saturday, August 20th, Sotheby’s blue-chip, Crème de la Crème car auction took place at the lovely Portola Hotel and Spa in Monterey. Sotheby’s splendid listing of “best of category” had 49 cars, featuring exotic sports and racing cars. A beautiful  green  1931 Duesenberg Model J Tourster sold for 1.2 million, a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider sold for $9.4 million, and a 1958 Cadillac ElDorado Brougham sold for only $270,000.

There was a cocktail lounge area outside the auction room where car enthusiasts and bidders could socialize. Amidst this crowd I met up-and-coming filmmaker Vince Carrino, who was creating a documentary film about what women think about cars, and how she judges a man by the car he drives. He filmed and interviewed a number of attendees, myself included. I will let everyone know when it showcases at the next AFI Film Festival.
