Janis Joplin was one of the greatest blues singers of our time. Her husky, earthy and explosive voice, still to this day has one of the most recognizable sounds that has the power to move you both emotionally and physically.

Not only did Janis have an incredible instrument, but she threw herself body and soul into every number she performed. She reminded me of the great gospel singers who would time after time “take us to church” as soon as they opened their mouth. This was Janis.

Her volcanic performances along with her sexual magnetism and unique flamboyant style made her one of the first ‘rock mamas’ who has influenced so many female singers who came after. This extraordinary lady changed rock and roll forever.

Her songs “Me and Bobby McGee”, “Piece of My Heart”, “Cry Baby,” “Summertime” and “Mercedes Benz” still brings chills to me everytime I hear them.

“A Night With Janis” written and directed by Randy Johnson is a musical journey celebrating Janis life, her successes, her insecurities and her battles. We also get to meet, thanks to some incredible supporting players who share the stage,  Joplin’s biggest musical influences including Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simon and the great Bessie Smith.

The show opened on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre in October 2013 and has been touring ever since. I saw it a few years back at the Pasadena Playhouse and it was definitely one of my more memorable theatrical experiences.

“A Night With Janis” will play at the Saban Theatre located at 8440 Wilshire Blvd, Beverly Hills this Saturday evening, Feb. 17, 2018, at 8:00 p.m. To purchase tickets go to wheremusicmeetsthesoul.com or call (888) 654-5006. Tickets range from $38-$68. This is one show that will have you dancing in your seats.

About Joan Alperin

Joan was born in Brooklyn and spent many years working as an actress in New York City. Even though she traveled extensively, Joan couldn't imagine living anywhere else.. Well one day, she met someone at a party who regaled her with stories about living in L. A. specifically Topanga Canyon. A few weeks later she found herself on an airplane bound for Los Angeles. Joan immediately fell in love with the town and has been living here for the last twenty years and yes, she even made it to Topanga Canyon, where she now resides, surrounded by nature, deer, owls and all kinds of extraordinary alien creatures.. Joan continued acting, but for the last several years (besides reviewing plays and film) she has been writing screenplays. Joan was married to a filmmaker who created the cult classic films, (way before she knew him) Faces of Death. As a result of his huge following, they created a funny movie review show entitled Two Jews on Film, where Joan and her husband, John would review movies and rate them with bagels You can see their reviews by going to youtube.com/twojewsonfilm. Although it's now only one Jew - Joan is occasionally joined by her beautiful Pekingnese and Japanese Chin.
