Sarah Silverman joins Voices United at the El Rey

The nonpartisan watchdog group Americans United for Separation of Church and State is hosting a concert called Voices United at the El Rey on October 1st. Comedian Sarah Silverman has just joined the line-up, which so far includes singer/songwriter Catie Curtis and folk artist Mary Gauthier.

Voices United is a nation-wide concert series to raise funds and awareness for Americans United, which is dedicated to “preserving the constitutional principle of church-state separation as the only way to ensure religious freedom for all Americans.” Founded in 1947, the organization uses law suits and letters to government officials to fight proposals for mandatory prayer and creationism in schools, taxpayer subsidies for religious schools, partisan politics in churches, and much more. The current Executive Director is both a minister and an attorney.

Anyone interested in hosting a Voices United house-concert, or performing at one, can find out more here.

AU’s Voices United for Separation of Church and State is actually comprised of a series of concerts around the country, from Sept. 28th through Oct. 1. There’s a map at the website that shows events in most of the states in the country – check it out!
