Cafe NELA Brings Extra Fancy’s Triumphant Return

Yeah, you missed it last night.  Except of course if you were one of the lucky 1oo ticket holders that snapped up entry to this rare live Extra Fancy performance before you could even spit out “S-I-N-N-E-R-M-A-N”…their first in 10+ years.  They delivered their classics such as “You Look Like a Movie Star, Honey” and “Violator” like they had never taken break from the scene, and the crowd loved every minute of it. Don’t fret, they will do another gig next spring, plenty of witnesses heard that promise and will hold them to it!

Extra Fancy is Brian Grillo (lead singer and oil drum), David Foster (bass), Derek O’Brien (drums) and Michael Hateley (guitar); and for those of you who may be unfamiliar (get familiar!), they were a beloved staple of LA’s 1990’s Silver Lake-based queer and straight indie music scenes and they have been missed!

Thanks Cafe NELA!… northeast LA’s little hub of punk, garage, rock, jazz, blues, experimental, psychedelic and ethnic music.

About Judy Ornelas Sisneros

I am a native Californian, born and raised in Bakersfield and eventually escaping to San Jose then San Francisco where I spent every free moment in punk and post-punk culture spaces before heading to LA permanently in 1989. I have also spent major time as an AIDS and queer street activist, which today along with my passion for punk/alternative music still informs my personal and social life. I love photography, film and playing punk/post-punk stuff on the bass. My LA Beat contributions are usually photos that give a glimpse into the vibrant art and music scene that makes Los Angeles such an amazing city to live in today.
