Radiant Space in Hollywood will be home to a floor-to-ceiling “interactive psychedelic textile cave” starting tomorrow, January 6th. The piece, entitled “Before You Were Born” uses mixed media, including paint, hand-sewn textiles, wire, paper-mache, rubber tubing, and emergency heat blankets to create the heavily detailed ceiling and walls. The 30-foot long by 12-foot wide by 12-foot high installation fills the entire gallery. We asked artist Laurie Shapiro if it is meant to be a womb. She replied, “The installation is meant to be immersive.  It can be interpreted as a womb, but it does not have to be.”

The exhibit will also include mixed-media artworks. The show will continue through January, as Radiant Space hosts dance, music and yoga events within the installation, and ends February 3rd. “Before You Were Born” was previously installed for three months at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles.

Saturday night the gallery will host an opening of Shapiro’s fully immersive artwork from 7-10pm, which will include interactive dance and music performances. The event is open to all ages. There is a paid [arking lot by Electric Owl with an entrance off of Gardner. Do not park in the lot directly next to the gallery. Normal gallery hours are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 11-4pm. Check out Laurie Shapiro’s Instagram.
