Pepper Jay has been involved in music and acting her whole life, from roles on TV’s ‘The Real McCoy‘ as a child through teaching performance in the LAUSD and ultimately, her own entertainment company where she has produced as well as taught performace skills, acting and singing. Pepper has now distilled her knowledge into a new book, Dynamic Song Performances: The Singer’s Bible. In it, she answers such questions as ‘what makes a singer a star’ and ‘how to successfully bond with an audience’. The book includes tips, techniques and skills to help professional singers stay at the top of their game and also ones to help aspiring singers who may be trying to go pro.
Various sections cover audience psychology, choosing a vocal performance coach and creating a fan base. Others cover style, moving on stage, eye contact and facial expressions. The book simplifies techniques and also uses a multitude of examples from well-known performers to easily illustrate the ideas. Finally, the book teaches how to be in front of the camera, including what the photographer looks for and ‘how to be photographed’. All this material, even red carpet hints, helps the up-and -coming performer rise to the top of their craft.
This is an excellent book for all who sing, and especially invaluable for actors who are interested in moving into roles in musicals. Pepper Jay has distilled the essence of her musical performance and coaching skills into an easy to read book. It is highly recommended for singers, songwriters and actors at any level.
