The Taste: Labor Day Picnic

Monday’s picnic was the one kid-friendly event of the weekend, with admission for children 12 and under free with an adult. The program touted it as a celebration of the sandwich, but it was more of a celebration of sugar. With cotton candy, caramel corn, ice cream, cake and loads of cookies it was a dessert wonderland.

What’s a kid’s event without loads of liquor? And most of that was sweet too. My first drink of the day was made up of cupcake frosting vodka and devils food cake vodka. I shit you not. Then Auchentoshan Malt Scotch made a sundae with scotch, vanilla ice cream and strawberry soda.

Favorite bites of the day included tacos from La Casita Mexicana and Casa Azule Cantina/Frida Restaurant. We also loved elote and ceviche from Rosa Mexicano, and sausages from Terrenea.

On the sweet side, where do we even start? Banana split cupcakes from Cake Mamas, zeppole from Rosa’s, poppy seed cake from Rosebud Cakes, and shaved ice from Ice Ice Shavie. Bouchon had their own take on sandwiches with a “secret weapon” ice cream sandwich made up of their daisy sandwich and grasshopper ice cream. Love you, Rory!
