*SPECIAL NOTE: BE LOOKING FOR MY UPCOMING, EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE FILM’S DIRECTOR, MALCOLM LEO!

In the summer of 1987, filmmaker Malcolm Leo sat down with Grateful Dead founding member and cultural hero Jerry Garcia.

The occasion was to record a few comments for Rolling Stone Magazine’s twentieth anniversary special, which Leo was producing and directing for ABC Television. It turned into so much more.

For more than two hours he responded to Leo’s questions from the bottom of his heart. At the height of his success and in the midst of his happiest days, Jerry Garcia opened his mind and revealed his soul. Captured on 16mm film by Russell Carpenter, the Cinematographer of Titanic, the interview presents Garcia discussing his life, music, family and friends. He is brilliant, charming, joyful and free. It’s Jerry Garcia as you have never seen him before.

JERRY: THE MOVIE is directed by celebrated Rock & Roll filmmaker Malcolm Leo, a critically acclaimed director and producer of feature films on Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys and Crosby, Stills & Nash. The team also includes producers John Hartmann and Aaron Godfred and associate producer Gina Podley. We’ve been working on this documentary for some time and need your help in finishing it!

This film includes never-before-seen footage, photographs, performances and even home concert footage from Deadheads like you.

We will be giving exclusive photo, video and email updates during production and post-production to all Kickstarter supporters. You will get to experience the moviemaking process as if you were sitting next to Malcolm in the edit suite.

We wanted to make this movie outside of the Hollywood system, free of their notes, politics and happy endings. So we asked ourselves, what would Jerry do? We posed the question to anybody who would listen and the answers were varied — sometimes brilliant, often funny and occasionally wild. Our conclusion: leave it in the hands of the Deadheads.

With your participation we will create the quintessential tribute to a man who embodied the time when heart mattered, compassion ruled and love prevailed.

Our current funding goal is $400,000 and this will go to licensing music, film and images and it’s expensive. The more backing we receive, the more awesome Jerry content we can include in this film. Just because we hit our goal doesn’t mean we can’t use more backing. Help us to make this movie as inclusive as it can be!

RISKS AND CHALLENGES Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Making a movie is always an ambitious endeavor. The team behind JERRY: THE MOVIE has a combined lifetime’s worth of experience making documentary and narrative film. We are working to procure footage, photos and other unseen media to bring you a documentary filled with never-before-seen content on Jerry Garcia. The licensing of footage, photos and music is a complicated and time-consuming process. We have a schedule and anticipate finishing the movie by September 2013 but there is always the chance it will take a little longer than we plan. We will under no circumstances, let this project linger unnecessarily long. We are professional filmmakers and this project will be our full-time job until it’s finished and delivered into the hands of those who supported us on Kickstarter. We will be diligent about communicating with our supporters and sharing the creative process with you. What a long, strange trip it will be.

Thanks for your support,

Malcolm, John, Aaron and Gina

Shirley Pena

About Shirley Pena

A native of Southern California, Shirley Peña began her career as a music journalist almost twenty years ago, writing for her websites "Stars In My Eyes: the Girlhowdy Website" and "La Raza Rock!" and progressed to creating various fan sites on Yahoo, including the first for New Zealand singer/songwriter Tim Finn. From there, she became a free agent, arranging online interviews for Yahoo fan clubs with various music artists (Andy White, John Crawford, Debora Iyall, John Easdale, etc.). She also lent her support in creating and moderating a number of Yahoo fan clubs for various music artists from the 1990s-today. As a music journalist, Shirley Peña has contributed to a number of magazines (both hard copy and online), among them: Goldmine, American Songwriter, Classic Drummer Magazine and UK-based Keyboard Player (where she was a principal journalist). A self-confessed "fanatic" of 1960s "British Invasion" bands, Classic Rock and nostalgic "Old Hollywood ", she also keeps her finger on the pulse of current trends in music, with a keen eye for up and coming artists of special merit. Shirley Peña loves Los Angeles, and is thrilled to join the writing staff of The Los Angeles Beat!
