SWEET TALK – HUNGRY FOR CANDY, GUYS? GET SOME NUTS!

As I was pondering my next topic for this column, I ran across various mementos from Snickers’ “Get some nuts!” ad campaign launched in Britain in 2006. It featured an ass-kickin’ Mr. T setting the British men straight about issues involving athletics, social etiquette, and picking up chicks. Mr. T’s advice was brief and to the point: “GET SOME NUTS!”

I love just about anything that Mr. T has to offer, especially when it relates to candy. Here is one ad from the campaign in which Mr. T, clad in a Snickers bar flak jacket, is apparently monitoring the city from a remote office searching for fools and sounding the “fool alert”:

And here he is berating a soccer player for wanting a time-out due to an injury. This time, he reinforces his message by charging in on a tank.

Unfortunately, Snickers and Mr. T got into some hot water when Mars launched an ad featuring a hapless speed walker. Some television stations declined to run the commercial because it was construed to be homophobic. Here’s the commercial, followed by Mr. T’s rebuttal to the accusations on Bill O’Reilly:

No matter where you stand on this video, you might need a Mr. T “Get Some Nuts!” ringtone.
