Dami Sushi and Izakaya will be holding their grand opening event starting Friday, March 29. The new restaurant, located in Buena Park, features fresh seafood, sashimi, sushi rolls and oysters in the sushi bar. Yakitori dishes, grilled on skewers in the Japanese style and a staple at many izakayas (Japanese pubs) throughout the world, will be another feature of Dami Sushi and Izakaya. Finally, on the beverage side, Dami will be serving draft beers such as Sapporo and Asahi, and craft sake from brewers such as Shinzui, Shinrai, Tenpouichi, Jokigen and Kubota.
Dami Sushi and Izakaya is the creation of Thomas Shin and Sylvia Lee, both Orange County residents. They felt there was a need in the area for a trendy yet casual place where people could go to enjoy some good sake, beers and Japanese cuisine in an friendly atmosphere. The Japanese Izakaya, a common style of pub in Japan, is the perfect concept for this. “We’re all very excited to start serving the community and give everyone a taste of Dami,” said Lee. “The word ‘Dami’ actually means to ‘a wide array of dishes and flavors,’ so we’re confident that whatever your taste, you’ll be able to really enjoy, not only the food, but the inviting atmosphere we’re looking to approach our new customers with.”
In addition to the Japanese dishes, many done as small plates as Japan’s version of tapas, Dami Sushi and Izakaya will also be serving a variety of Korean and Korean-influenced dishes as a nod to “Koreatown’s” nearby large population. Also, to further introduce themselves to the community and show their interest in helping it, Dami Sushi & Izakaya has partnered with the Buena Park-based non-profit organization Giving Children Hope. Fifteen percent of proceeds during Friday night dinner service 5 p.m. to midnight and Sunday afternoon lunch service 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. will go to the organization and its We Got Your Back program helping distribute backpacks filled with nutritious food to 1,500 poverty-stricken children and their families in Orange County each week.
Several of Dami Sushi and Izakaya’s signature dishes include Oyster Tempura, made with enoki mushroom, grated radish and ponzu sauce, Creamy Crab Croquette a fried blue crab meatball and tartar sauce and Yoshi’s Owari Chicken Wings, a dish of deep fried chicken wings and Yoshi’s secret seasoning. A signature sushi dish is the Dami Spring Roll, made with salmon, crabmeat, shrimp, tuna, cucumber, avocado and wrapped in soy paper .
This Friday night at 5 p.m., Dami Sushi & Izakaya will open for business, celebrating with a grand weekend of events to match the grand opening. Each day during open hours, Dami Sushi & Izakaya will host games, giveaways and entertainment outside the new storefront including a raffle giveaway for a new iPad Mini and carnival games and contests for prizes such as tickets to Knott’s Berry Farm, movie tickets and gift certificates to the new restaurant. Additionally, Dami Sushi & Izakaya will reward the first 50 customers from each day a $20 gift certificate for their next visit and all customers after, a $10 gift certificate.

FYI: Although Dami is mostly a Japanese style Izakaya, Dami is actually a Korean word meaning “many flavours”. The owners are very philanthropic, much to their credit. It makes me want to be in Orange County for Friday dinner or Sunday lunch. Great article on a progressive restaurant.
