Los Angeles Beat readers should be familiar with local street artist Skyler Grey.  This young man started drawing at age 2 after his mother died in a tragic swimming accident. His work has been seen in galleries around the work, from our local, LabArt, to ones in Switzerland, South Africa, and London.

His work and school (he’s only 14 years old) doesn’t stop him from mentoring and helping other kids and teenagers through After School All Stars and other entities.  To all, with a special nod to inner city kids growing up he has, his message is simply: “no matter what situations they face, they can succeed to unimaginable heights through art.”  Skyler accepted his award in New Orleans, Louisiana at the 365Black awards co-sponsored by BET Networks.  McDonald’s 365Black Awards are given annually to salute outstanding individuals who are committed to making positive contributions that strengthen the African-American community.  The 365Black® Awards show will air next month on August 10 at 7 p.m. PST on the BET channel and on August 17, 2014 at 8 p.m. on CENTRIC.
