Next Sunday, August 17, the Los Angeles Beat is proud to present another Sunday afternoon show for your enjoyment, three bands from our extended rock and roll family. While the recurring monthly shows that we put on in 2012 and 2013 are now a thing of the past, we will still be popping up from time to time when we have the chance to present something special for our readers, friends and neighbors. This show will be our first to be held at Cafe NELA, run by our longtime pal Dave Travis in Northeast LA, and our favorite new venue.
Biblical Proof Of UFOs (4pm) remain one of LA’s most psychedelic, space-searching trios. Their methods are scientifically sound, but their ideas threaten to disrupt the space-time continuum and deposit the listener in a weird, scary place with no obvious route home. Just remember, getting there is half the fun, but getting home is your sole responsibility.
Backbiter (5pm), the heavy rock trio for which this author plays drums, will be playing a set of songs from throughout our twenty-three year history with the subtext of honoring the state of Michigan, which will be personally represented, at least in the audience. We plan to rock like we know how.
Trotsky Icepick (6pm) reunited a few years ago following nearly two decades of prolonged hiatus, and their post-reunion shows have been a constant source of delight. SST-era veterans will remember this post-alt supergroup made up of former members of the Urinals/ 100 Flowers, the Last and the Leaving Trains as one the oddest right turns in that scene, with downright danceable rhythms and memorable choruses replacing the endless tension of their earlier bands. For their second wind, they’ve toughened up the sound just enough to give them a confident edge that the sometimes fragile studio recordings missed.
The LA Beat Presents: Trotsky Icepick, Backbiter, Biblical Proof of UFOs at Cafe NELA, 1906 Cypress Ave, LA. Sunday August 17, 3pm – 7pm. $5 cover charge, 21 and over.
