Micheladas are the Latin American answer to the Bloody Mary, perfect for daytime drinking and believed to cure hangovers. The michelada is a mixture of beer and tomato juice or Clamato and a variety of chiles and spices. There are a variety of stories as to the origin and naming of the michelada. The most reasonable-sounding explanation is that the name comes from “mi chela helada.” meaning “my cold beer.”
All that mixing and measuring can be a lot to take on when nursing a hangover. Some breweries, like Miller, Anheuser-Busch and Tecate now make canned versions of micheladas, but where is the fun in that? Diablo Tacos has invented the Diablo Michelada Pop in their quest to concoct the perfect combination of sour, salty and spicy required. Just drop the frozen pop into a glass, add beer, and there you have it. You can also eat them like a popsicle. There is no alcohol in it, but it’s kind of spicy.
You can find Diablo Pops at Whole Foods and Gelson’s Supermarkets. They are also sold at the Sky Bar at Mondrian Hotel, Dodger Stadium, the Hollywood Bowl, and of course at Diablo Tacos on Sunset.
