Designed in 1929 by Los Angeles architects John and Donald Parkinson with interior design by Jock Peters, the Bullocks Wilshire Building in Koreatown operated as a luxury department store for over 60 years, closing in 1993. Its last owners, Macy’s, stripped the store of its vintage fixtures for their other locations but after legal battles, almost all of the 1929 artifacts were returned.
And thank goodness. Southwestern Law School, which purchased the building in 1994 and put $30 million dollars and 10 years into an award-winning restoration, holds an Open House one weekend a year which sells out quickly. I finally had a chance to attend and marvel at this landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
