Sunny War has been described as an unlikely combination of styles, “she may be a Robert Johnson with a shot of Bad Brains, but even this description falls short.” (Michael Simmons, L.A. Weekly)
The first thing you notice about Sunny is how she plays her guitar, claw hammer style, a complex banjo style of guitar playing frequently used by Southern acoustic blues guitarists. It’s unique–and amazing to watch. Then there’s her voice, with qualities of Billie Holiday, Joan Armatrading, & Tracy Chapman.
After moving around from city to city as a child with her mother she decided to try it out in California. Busking in San Francisco and San Diego, she moved and finally settling in Venice where paid her dues playing the Venice boardwalk and local clubs which brought her notoriety and an endorsement from Gibson.
Her lyrics prove she is not afraid to share her insights and philosophies on life, as well as her life’s experiences. You’re in for a mesmerizing set of original, thoughtfully created songs. Sunny goes on between 12:15 -12:30 a.m. early Thursday morning, with an on-air interview with the band to follow. Listen live at 88.9fm or stream it live at kxlu.com
