With the future of Torrance’s Alpine Village uncertain, the time is ripe for an evolution in Oktoberfest celebrations. Brouwerij West in San Pedro, already a destination for craft beer and live music, is poised to fit the bill with its Überfest, and has even pulled off a coup in booking HEINO!’s only California appearance this Oktoberfest.
If you’ve ever been to an Oktoberfest celebration, you know it is a riot of beer drinking, costume-wearing, chicken dancing, oom pah pah band fun. If not, this would be a perfect opportunity to dip your toes in this unique celebration of Bavarian culture and American kitsch. The highlight of any Oktoberfest party is the appearance of HEINO, Canadian-born writer-comic Marc Hickox’s impersonation of the most famous German singer of all time.
Also on hand is host Festmeister Hans, typically seen at Alpine Village. He’s the guy responsible for Oktoberfest parody videos “Oktoberfest Night” and “Oktoberfest Gängsta,” and he keeps the party going all night. The tunes will alternate between oompah and rock and roll tribute bands Satisfaction, Atomic Punks, Missus Jones and Motley, Inc, depending on the night (see schedule below). Food options abound with 4 types of sausages (including vegan), sides, pretzels, desserts, and a special Uberfest beer called Boom Brau that Brouwerij West is brewing for the occasion (along with the rest of their regular, delicious ales).
Oktoberfest is certainly about tying one on, but it’s also about community, family and friends. Take a group, don a German Alpine hat and work out your armpit muscles for the chicken dance. It is a guaranteed good time.
Überfest will run October 4,5,11, and 12. Tickets can be purchased here
