The L.A. Times Food Bowl is a month-long celebration that takes place from April 30th through May 31st. Yesterday the Times hosted a preview event at the Firehouse Hotel in the Arts District. We were treated to small bites from All Day Baby, Bon Temps, Spoon by H, Zoe Food Party, plus drinks from Suntory and coffee, courtesy of Braun.

Along with the restaurants we sampled at the announcement yesterday, participating L.A. favorites include Guelaguetza, Hui Tou Xiang, La Morra Pizzeria, Mian and Slab BBQ. Chefs hosting events include Jordan Kahn of Vespertine, Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis from Bavel and Bestia and Josef Centeno of Bar Ama, Orsa & Winston, Bäco Mercat, and Amá•cita. Visiting chefs hail from such far-off locales as Slovenia, Japan), and Australia.

The fourth annual Food Bowl is planning more than 100 events across Los Angeles, and this year the event is adding international culinary talent to the local favorites. Once again, we can expect pop-ups, restaurant specials, long table feasts, dinners at select restaurants from The Times 101 Best Restaurants list, food-themed neighborhood walking tours, chef collaborations, panel discussions, and the always-popular Night Market.

On April 30, the “Opening Night: Collaboration Lab” on April 30, 2020, will feature chefs from a variety of restaurants working together to create delicious bites. The tasting event will also feature the announcement of the Restaurant of the Year winner and the annual Gold Award, continuing in Jonathan Gold’s memory. Previous years’ winners of the Gold Award have included Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger of Border Grill, and Bryant Ng and Kim Luu-Ng of Cassia.

Other highlights include a tribute to the Jewish Deli, and Night Market, which will be running May 14-17 in Grand Park. The themes of this year’s Night Markets are “Middle East Feast,” “LAFiesta,” “Pizza & Pasta,” “Dumplings, Noodles & Rice”, and our favorite, the “All-Star BBQ.”

The full event lineup with more details will be announced on April 5, 2020, with the official guide in the Los Angeles Times and at The L.A. Times website. The LA Beat will be bringing you our recommendations and all of the information you need to make May a month to remember.

If you are a chef or restaurateur and would like to get involved, event submissions for Food Bowl and food vendor submissions for Night Market are open until Feb. 21, 2020. For additional information, visit the website.
