This Tijuana-Born Salsa Maker is All About Integrity & Authenticity

El Novato is a line of unique, locally made salsas crafted with integrity. This new company is the creation of film costumer Gaby Acosta. Born in Tijuana, where she lived until she was three, Gaby has spent her life divided between Mexico and the LA/Orange County area.

Gaby was motivated by the difficulty she had finding salsas she loved that were not made by her family. “Growing up so much in Mexico really influenced my tastebuds. I’m very connected to Mexico. In Los Angeles, there’s amazing food and in Santa Ana, where I grew up, but there were never salsas like at my house. It’s hard to find the salsas I like — so many things get watered down. If a salsa was designed to be spicy, I want it to be spicy! Either you like it or you don’t. I don’t want to compromise.

Gaby found success in entertainment — working in wardrobe for the 2019 blockbuster “Captain Marvel” is her biggest credit so far. But when Covid shut down filming last year, Gaby decided to finally focus on the project she’d thought about for years but never had time for: creating a line of salsas that taste as good as the ones made by her family. She told me, “When the pandemic hit, I thought, “Now I can actually fill out the paperwork and do the things I couldn’t find time for before. It helped me get organized and finalize the recipes. This pandemic has been a blessing in disguise for me and my family. It’s been difficult but we’re happy. I always complained I didn’t have enough time. Now I finally did.”

LA Beat Interview – KK Barrett of The Screamers Who Finally Have a Record Coming Out

The Screamers have not stopped being ahead of their time since their formation in 1976. A band that never courted mainstream acceptance, there may simply not be enough time for society to catch up to them. They were so extreme, they never even put out a record. As drummer K.K. Barrett put it, “All groups need growth, and they need to change. And we just changed right out of who we were” before it could be captured properly.

Barrett’ s arrival in LA from Oklahoma in January of 1977 allowed the band’s first full lineup to come together. He didn’t replace the Roland TR-66 rhythm machine that the core team of singer/ genius front man Tomata du Plenty and keyboardists Tommy Gear and David Brown had been using; he joined it as a second drummer. In order to integrate the TR-66 with a drum kit, they had to run it through a bass cabinet, put it behind KK’s head, and turn it up, way up. The sound they developed that spring and summer was captured on a set of four-track demos that are about to be released as an EP on Superior Viaduct – the first sanctioned studio recordings by the Screamers ever pressed on vinyl. Movies Till Dawn: May Queens

The Reckoning” (2020, RLJE Films) After resisting the untoward advances of her squire landlord (Steven Waddington), 17th century London widow and mother Charlotte Kirk finds herself accused of witchcraft and facing unspeakable torture at the hands of steely witchfinder Sean Pertwee. This impressively appointed period supernatural thriller fits well into director Neil Marshall’s recent efforts to build genre films around strong female leads (see also “The Descent,” “Doomsday”), and benefits from Kirk’s redoubtable presence as victim-turned-avenger. Kirk who also co-wrote the film, has a fine grain grit that helps balances the film’s uneven elements: a frequent tilt towards grisly witchsploitation a ala ’70s costume gross-outs like “Witchfinder General,” scenery chewing from Pertwee, and unfocused plot sojourns (a dalliance with a Devil straight out of Benjamin Christensen’s “Haxan” never gels). Kirk and the production designs keep matters above board; RLJE’s DVD includes deleted scenes.

FYC is a New Bar & Restaurant Tucked Away in a Chic Boutique Hotel in Burbank

In the Cloud cocktail at FYC Burbank. Photo by Karin E. Baker for The LA Beat.

FYC Bar & Kitchen is a hidden gem tucked away in the Hotel Amarano, a chic boutique hotel located slightly off the beaten path in a largely residential Burbank neighborhood.

FYC is an acronym for “For Your Consideration. The Tinseltown-influenced name befits a spot located near Warner Bros., Disney, and Universal Studios.

A babbling fountain, a tree bestrewn with lights, bougainvillea, a banana palm, and other greenery make the patio feel like a private sanctuary. Striking cane chairs and tile-topped tables enhance the getting-away-from-it-all mood. Spend a bit of time relaxing here in easy conversation and you’ll see why the Amarano is a favorite of low-key celebrities doing business at the nearby studios.

If you’d prefer to sit inside, the lounge is a fashionable, relaxing space featuring calming neutrals accented with goldenrod yellow. You’ll find a few rustic details and decorative objects referencing Burbank history.

Casey Hensley: Powerful Singing, Powerful Writing, Powerful Blues On New ‘Good As Gone’ Album

Casey Hensley PR photoCasey Hensley has the blues inside her. Imprinted on her soul, this young singer and songwriter out of Oceanside, CA sings the blues with a vocal range that is just amazing, bringing to mind many of the most famous female blues singers to ever have graced the stage. Singing her own songs, she has imprinted on them a style all their own. As shown in her new Good As Gone album, Casey can really write and sing the blues. Not only the basic blues, but many of the offshoots too, showing a depth and knowledge of this range of styles and converting them into a vehicle for her powerhouse vocals. Blues, Soul, R&B, Rock ‘n’ Roll and Swing all become part of Casey’s repertoire.

Casey, also, hearkens back to the era when a singer was a singer and not a singer/**. Up on stage, she has the presence of a Tina Turner, the sass of Big Mama Thornton, the pure passion of Janis Joplin; and the purity of voice of Etta James. She has assembled an excellent band for her new album, on which she presents nine original songs and her stunning vocals. A big proponent of “doing it her way”, Casey has taken the Producer’s mantle for Good as Gone. Co-producing the album as well as providing the guitar tracks is Laura Chavez, one of the top blues guitarists around today. Laura spent several years backing the blues singer and ex-porn star Candye Kane, as well as recording albums for a host of others including Mike Ledbetter, Monster Mike Welch, Vanessa Collier and Nikki Hill. Backing her on drums is Evan Caleb Yearsley. The bass line is held down by Marcos C., another of the Southern California musicians that make up her current band. Johnny Viau and Steve Ebner provide horns for many of the album’s tracks.

The Los Angeles Beat asked Casey some questions about her musical history as well as the Good As Gone album. Here, she gives us an insight into how all of this came about:

Q: You seem to find a wide range of musical styles that you can extract the blues from. Was the blues a natural draw for your singing and writing?

A: It definitely was. I’ve always had a very bluesy voice and loved rock n roll and soul, singing and writing blues songs came very naturally to me.
