Watt’s Hyphenated Man Opera

A crowd of dedicated fans crammed into the Hobby Shop in Eagle Rock/Highland Park last night to watch Mike Watt and the Missingmen rock the hell out of Watt’s second opera, Hyphenated Man. The opera is based on a Hieronymus Bosch painting he saw in Madrid, with songs like Head-and-Feet-Only-Man, Boot-Wearing-Fish-Man and Baby-Cradling-Tree-Man. Dressed as Watt was in Djinbei, Tom Watson and Raul Morales pushed every note to the brink. The show brought me back to my teen days pressed up against the stage, kids grinning at each other like hippies on acid while the music made our problems melt away.
