In Japanese culture, “kawaii” describes the quality of cuteness or adorability. That quality has evidenced itself in fashion, style and characters like Hello Kitty, Sailor Moon and Pikachu.
Kawaii is often identified with a particular look that has traveled to the West. It is characterized by pastel shades of pale pink and blue, rainbows, anthropomorphizations (Furniture with happy faces), fuzzy animals, cupcakes and other sweets. Offshoots include Panda Kawaii,, Zana Kawaii and Kawaii Bear.
Tonight at 8pm Royal T will be hosting “The Roots of Kawaii” the grand opening of the Rune Boutique! Rune Naito‘s, big-eyes girls and cutesy animal drawings have made him a pioneer in Kawaii. I’m hoping they will have his illustrations of girls in the cute panda ear hoods. The event will also be featuring Medicom Toy and 6%DokiDoki Fashion. The Rune pop-up shop will run from December 9, 2011 – January 9, 2012.
