Heads up folks, we have another heady afternoon coming your way next Sunday the 24th with a free, all-ages, afternoon show at the Redwood Bar & Grill courtesy of your pals at the LA Beat.
4:00 PM – AWKWARD is a duo of bassists Kira Roessler (Black Flag, dos, Twisted Roots) and Devin Hoff (Nels Cline Singers, Xiu Xiu, Good For Cows) that made its debut just under a year ago. Our experience with both of these fine players leads us to believe that the combination of forces is going to result in a massive low-end mindfuck delivered straight to the solar plexus for what Kira describes as “about 35 minutes.”
5:00 PM SWORDS OF FATIMA, in an effort to restore balance to the universe, will perform their entire set with no bass player at all. But you won’t miss it. The antics of Buko Pan Guerra on rip-roaring Eastern-inflected surf guitar and former Popdefect wonder child Nick Scott on drums are always fascinating to behold, and this being the first chance we’ve had to see them in a couple years, we’re looking forward to every moment.
6:00 PM BIKOS came to our attention by way of their bass player, longtime pal Dave Jones of Carnage Asada, Magnolia Thunderpussy and (recently) Deadbeats renown. This band offers an angular, post-punk informed take on the modern pop song, crafting memorable, off-kilter moments of sustained tension followed by sweet release.
We strongly advise you not to miss it! Support the arts and bring your kids. We’re grateful to Bob Cantu & the folks at the Redwood for giving us a chance to put on free shows that hopefully everyone can make it to, and to all the people playing the gigs. We hope to introduce you on to some cool music in the process of entertaining ourselves with the kind of shows we’d want to see.
The Los Angeles Beat Presents – a monthly free afternoon show for all ages, every fourth Sunday of the Month at the Redwood Bar & Grill, 316 W 2nd St, LA, from 3pm – 7pm.
