We’re continuing our series of free, all-ages afternoon shows at the Redwood Bar and Grill this weekend with appearances from one of our favorite San Pedro bands of the moment and a couple of visitors from Portland, Oregon.
Sassafras have been tearing up local stages for the last few years, earning a reputation for classic-sounding riffs delivered with frantic energy. Singer/ guitarist Sailor Alexander has a knack for playing up the tension and release his inside sturdily constructed songs, as well as a relentless drive that makes this band in a way that recalls Drive Like Jehu at their most skin-crawling. And in Joe Dean, they have one of this scene’s most nimble and imaginative bass players holding up the bottom end.
Youthbitch and Boom!, on a hastily arranged West Coast tour, were brought to our attention by Bob Cantu at the Redwood, and we’re happy to welcome them to LA. The former sound like a modern day Vibrators with more overactive twin guitars. The latter are similarly hyped-up melodic punk but faster and more manic. Suddenly clicking on Facebook links makes me nostalgic for 7-inch singles. If there continue to be Killed By Death compilations covering the obscure self-released punk of the 2010s, both of these bands are sure to be highlights of their respective volumes.
As happens every last Sunday of the month at the Redwood, this show is free, with all ages admitted, and runs from 4pm to 7pm. We hope to see you there! We can’t reveal the lineup for next month yet but we hope to announce the return of an LA legend. Stay tuned!
