Sunday afternoon was locals only day at The Taste of LA. Hosted by Jonathan Gold and Evan Kleiman, local restaurants showcased the best Los Angeles has to offer. My first taste and one of the most surprisingly good was the veal charcuterie from Ombra. On the sausage front, Wurtskuche was daring the guests with rattlesnake and rabbit.
Antonia of Black Market brought us a high-end fluffernutter that was stoner food at its finest. Momed was serving an old favorite – duck shawarma. We love their shawarma! Street often serves their paana puri, but this year they had some competition from another vendor, so I brought them each a sample of the other so we could have a paana puri-off. There was no definitive winner. Valerie Confectioners blew us away with a grapefruit cake and a crunch cake that tasted like candy. Bulgari delivered with rich gelato.
The lines were getting pretty long on this day, so I missed out on what I’m sure was some killer Thai and Mexican food, considering Jonathan Gold’s long arm was in the mix. Next year I will arrive much earlier.
