Drummer Roy Morgan has presented an annual tribute to Johnny Thunders for four years running, with an increasingly heavy lineup each year. For this one, East LA punk legends the Zeros are making a rare appearance, as is original Heartbreakers guitarist Walter Lure. Lure will be backed by the L.A. Waldos, including Morgan on drums and Joey Pinter from Rent Party on guitar. Prima Donnas, Crazy Squeeze, Telephone Lovers, Eddie Lopez’ always-on Electric Children, Dirty Eyes, and Black Mambas will all play brief sets, along with Morgan’s other current band, Devil Dogs West.
Asked how Lure was persuaded to make the journey west to attend, Morgan said, “it really took a phone call and a plane ticket. Walter is excited to play the show. The Zeros wanted to play the show as well, I’m pretty sure they learned a thing or two from Johnny. Which makes this a great co headline show. Robert (Lopez of the Zeros, aka El Vez) is flying in for the show so we have all original members.”
About what Devil Dogs West has on offer, Morgan said “The Devil Dogs Eest came about through my friend Tsubasa, he introduced me to Steve Baise and we decided to jam. We loved playing with each other doing Devil Dogs stuff that Steve wrote. We have played a few shows but not many. we are writing new stuff and searching for a new name. We play fast and mean like the DD did: non-stop, in your face rock and roll.”
