It’s Time for the Chinatown Moon Festival!

The moon Festival is also known as the Lantern FestivalSaturday night Chinatown will celebrate the 74th annual Moon Festival. The Autumn Moon Festival takes place in the Central Plaza beginning at 5pm. It is believed that this is the time of the year when the moon is at its fullest and brightest, and anyone who saw that super moons would have to agree. Since it follows the lunar calendar, the celebration can take place at different times. The moon is a symbol of family, so family reunions often take place during the celebration, and there is a heavy focus on family unity. For agrarian areas of China, it is also a Harvest festival.

The celebration includes a Craft Beer Garden Curated by Eagle Rock Brewery, food trucks including our favorite, Tabom, moon viewing, live music brought to you by The LA Weekly, a Photo Booth with Original Vintage Cutouts, Calligraphy Demos, Clay Sculpture, Face Painting, and most exciting of all – Fruit Carving! Entertainment includes Acrobatics and a Contortionist, Ukelele, and the East Wind Lion Dance Troupe. There will also be a marketplace with Scoops, Hop Woo and Golden City, plus many more. Local art galleries will host openings with modern art and free booze.

There will be the usual cooking demos, once again expertly emceed by Shirley Zhang and Eddie Lin of Deep End Dining and Los Angeles Magazine. Exciting events at the Culinary Stage include a Cocktail Demo, a Moon Cake Eating Competition, and Lisa’s Dumpling Party!

Saturday, September 13, 2014 5pm-12am Central Plazas 943-951 N. Broadway Los Angeles, CA 90012 Free for all ages. The festival is easily accessed via Metro Gold Line rail from the Chinatown Station.
