A huge crowd turned out Friday for a special birthday party. The Queen Mary, one of the most beautiful ships ever made, was launched on September 26, 1934. Guests from all over came to the Queen in Long Beach to help celebrate her 80th year. Quite a few special events occurred, including Commodore Everette Hoard of the Queen Mary reading a birthday message sent to the ship from Queen Elizabeth in England. The Satin Dollz recreated music of the ’40s for all the guests and the Queen herself was decked out in bunting all around. And what kind of birthday party would it be without a cake? Master baker Jose Barajas, of Mmm….Cakes in San Diego, presented a 15 foot long, 600 pound cake built to scale of the Queen Mary. The cake had 200 lbs. of fondant and modeling chocolate, 100 lbs. of buttercream and 80 lbs. of butter along with 100 lbs. of flour. 10lbs. of raspberry preserves finished it off. There was a long line to taste the cake, but everyone agreed that it was delicious. A photo essay follows the break.
