While you were all anticipating the Golden Globes with bated breath and sweaty brow this weekend, something equally bodacious was going down in Vegas. Celebrations were being commemorated, geek/tech jokes slung about like all too many giddy, Angry Birds, and Emmys distributed like much coveted hardware from The Mighty Thor’s most Thunderously Televised Toolbox!

Lead by Co-Masters of Ceremony, legendary game show host Alex Trebek and Tech Guru David Pogue, The National Academy of Television and Arts Sciences (NATAS) and The Television Academy commemorated The 66th Annual Technological & Engineering Emmy Awards this past Thursday, January 8th at the Bellagio in Las Vegas to much pomp and circumstance!  This is the 9th year these awards have been presented simultaneously with the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, and the first year that NATAS and the Television Academy have celebrated in conjunction with one another in eons in what has now fondly been dubbed “Nerdfest” or “Nerdapalooza”.

Trebek’s aptness for his lauded role is evident via his dry wit in light of his first introductory quip, “I must confess I am not the most knowledgeable individual when it comes to new technology. I still remember when turning something off for fifteen minutes and then plugging it back in solved all the problems.  That same theory wrecked my first marriage.” You can nearly hear the audience’s laughter echoing off the hallowed walls of the Bellagio Ballroom!

“I can’t think of a more entertaining and tech-savvy pair of co-hosts than Alex Trebek and David Pogue for our grand celebration of the best in technology across the television spectrum,“ NATAS president Bob Mauro will declare. “With honorees such as Apple, HBO, Intel, Microsoft, MLB, Netflix, and Tivo, and lifetime honorees such as, Larry Thorpe from Canon, SMPTE and Kazuo Hirai of the Sony Corporation, this was one of the best tech shows in all of CES!”

“We were happy to join with the National Academy in honoring this year’s Engineering Emmy Award recipients. These innovators’ achievements set the standards for capturing, presenting and transmitting the best images and sound for television’s highest quality content.  They have transformed television into a truly sensory experience,” adds President and COO of the Television Academy enthusiastically!

A lively celebration followed in the Bellagio ballroom to festive music and any and all tech-savvy lighting effects where much fun was had by all!

About Jennifer K. Hugus

Jennifer K. Hugus was born at a very young age. At an even earlier age, she just knew she would one day write for the LA Beat! Having grown up in Massachusetts, France, and Denmark, she is a noted fan of Asian Cuisine. She studied ballet at the Royal Danish Ballet Theatre and acting at U.S.C. in their prestigious BFA drama program. She also makes her own jewelry out of paints and canvas when she isn’t working on writing absurdist plays and comparatively mainstream screenplays. Jennifer would like to be a KID when she grows up!
