Vintage Tattoo Flash: 100 Years of Traditional Tattoos from the Collection of Jonathan Shaw Signing and Exhibit at La Luz

flashWhen you walk into a tattoo shop, the first thing you notice is the tattoo designs wallpapering the place. The designs are known as “flashes.” Vintage, hand-drawn flash is a rarity, and outlaw tattooist Jonathan Shaw owns one of the largest collections of vintage tattoo flash in the world. PowerHouse Books is releasing “Vintage Tattoo Flash:
100 Years of Traditional Tattoos from the Collection of Jonathan Shaw” in May. Going back as far as 1900, the book features flashes by Bob Shaw, Zeke Owen, Tex Rowe, Ted Inman, Ace Harlyn, Ed Smith, Paul Rogers, the Moskowitz Brothers, and even tattoos from the Pike, for you old-school locals out there.

La Luz de Jesus Gallery will be hosting a two-day pop-up exhibit on May 3rd and 4th, with book signing on the 4th. Although Shaw says that he has enough material in this collection to put out another 5 to 10 volumes, his bio of world traveling and friends both famous and infamous makes us hope his next book is an autobiography.

A pop-up exhibition of original, Vintage Tattoo Flash art from the book will be displayed for two days only, Tuesday & Wednesday May 3rd/4th.
The book signing will be on May 4th only.
Only books purchased at the gallery will be eligible for signing.
