Beat Recommends: 50 Years of Sergio Mendes & Brazil 66 at Hollywood Bowl

Youtube comments don’t lie: you gotta love the guy on the Pringles can.

It’s been a scorching hot summer so far, and the urge to sit back and hear to the sounds of Brazil performed by a master, with a cool beverage in hand, has become almost irresistible. Thank goodness Sergio Mendes is coming to our town, this weekend and not next, to celebrate the golden anniversary of his best-known band. It’s only fitting that Lani Hall, lead vocalist for Brazil 66 in their heyday, will be making a guest appearance along with her husband Herb Alpert, whose Tjiuana Brass toured with Mendes and signed him to his first US deal fifty years ago. Jazz singer and national treasure Dianne Reeves and hotshot NYC guitarist Romero Lubambo will be there, as will the Raiz Brazil dance company and the Bowl orchestra with soprano Angel Blue. Impress your friends and bring in a whole briefcase full of the stuff you need to make caipirinhas. It’s the most idyllic summer refreshment likely to come your way this weekend.

An Olympic Carnival: 50 Years of Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 at the Hollywood Bowl, Friday, August 12 and Saturday, August 13, 8pm.
