Hollywood Jesus, aka WeHo Jesus, aka Kevin Short, aka Kevin Lee Light, passed away on December 13, 2017, at Cedar Sinai in Los Angeles. He was a regular at the Comedy Store, YouTube’s “WeHoans,” The annual Pride March, and was often featured on TMZ. He was known for being an avid gardener, having a kind heart and for taking pictures with anyone who asked.
With the blessing of Kevin’s family, there will be a candlelight vigil Sunday, January 7, from 4:30 PM until 6 PM in West Hollywood Park at 647 N San Vicente Blvd, West Hollywood. A local councilmember and the Mayor Protem will be speaking. Attendees are encouraged to bring candles, lighters, florals, photos, etc., and should dress for cold weather. Event page.
I have known Kevin since 2010. He used to come to my Jazz gigs. We always had a great time together. I would take him to the Rainbow and he would sit with me and my pals. He was always nice to my rocker pals, but the most interesting time was last Thanksgiving. Kevin ran into me on the bus on my way to dinner with a 94-year-old that I was caretaking.
Kevin and I always had a semi-romance going which never got consummated because I am the marrying kind, and it’s kinda strange making love to someone who looks like a guy you have been praying to all your life. Well, Kevin and I hugging and snuggling on the bus scandalized the other bus riders, so I asked him to dinner at Clifton’s with me and 94-year-old Ted.
When I showed up at Ted’s and walked in, he was in his very best hat with his walker–and being Jewish–was surprised to see my date. Those two became fast friends as the three of us ate. Families gathered around Kevin for pictures, like he was a rock star. After dinner, he picked up the check. We sent Ted home in an Uber and kissed each other goodbye. He went walking to spend time with the poor and the homeless, and I went home thinking how much I loved Kevin and always will…
