Robby Krieger and Henry Diltz Revive The Morrison Hotel for a Day

The line curled around the block on Hope street. Everyone was waiting to get into a gigantic empty warehouse in downtown Los Angeles to remember the Doors in 2020. Robby Krieger of the Doors, photographer Henry Ditz and thousands of Doors fans gathered together to celebrate the Iconic band. 5,000 people got their picture taken in front of a mock-up of The Morrison Hotel from the Doors album cover. They waited in line for four hours. They also wrote down their email addresses for future marketing and financial mining (Henry Diltz is a genius) For now, the warehouse exterior is basically only a movie prop. Eventually, the Hotel Morrison facade will be part of a new Hotel complex.

Meanwhile, inside, Robby signed all of the people’s personal Doors paraphernalia. and Henry Diltz, co-creator of the world-famous Morrison Hotel art galleries in New York and LA signed and sold his Amazing Doors photos from 50 years ago. The photos were displayed beautifully, even if the gallery was just this shell of a building.

Michael Des Barres led a Q&A with Robby and also performed an acoustic set. All in all, it was quite an event. The backyard had a bar and food trucks. Doors Music was blasting as the crowd milled around in their Doors signature tee shirts and hoodies. When I left at 8 p.m., the line was still around the corner–five hours later.

  1. I hope that Doors-loving readers of the Los Angeles Beat may also enjoy my piece on “Day of the Doors,” which also includes a map, “The Doors’ Los Angeles.” If you’ve got any additions for the map, please let me know!
