Miwa Matreyek’s Los Angeles Premiere of “Infinitely Yours: A Dream-like Meditation on Climate Catastrophe*” opened last night and continues its brief run Thursday, January 16, 2020, through, Saturday, January 18, 2020, at the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT).
Award-winning animator, designer, and performer Miwa Matreyek marries together a live multi-media experience that includes her animation and shadow silhouette puppetry coupled with a live music soundtrack performance by SORNE (Morgon Sorne) in a “fever-dream meditation of the news headlines we see every day heralding the epoch of the Anthropocene and life-altering climate change” to create a “kaleidoscopic homage to our biosphere manifested at the intersection of cinema and theatre.”
The live soundtrack is comprised from SORNE’s avant-garde opera “House of Stone,” spanning six of his albums, where he uses “five-octave vocal range, self-made instruments, and found objects.”
This premiere performance at the Frank Gehry-designed performing arts center provided a unique and new opportunity to add a more vibrant live music experience to the project.
“For my previous work, normally I’d share it with prerecorded music…but because I was using music by one musician [SORNE], we built in an option where if the presenter is able to, we can actually perform with live music,” Matreyek said. “So that is something that is exciting with the REDCAT.”
Touring internationally since 2010, Matreyek weaves “surreal and poetic narratives of conflict between humanity and nature,” where she, as co-founder and core-collaborator of the multi-media theater company, Cloud Eye Control, has had previous like-presentations at TED, REDCAT, RADAR LA, MOMA, the White Light Festival at Lincoln Center, and the New Frontier Program at Sundance Film Festival, and more.
With a run-time of 25 minutes, the L.A. presentation of “Infinitely Yours” will be paired with some of Matreyek’s older work, creating an 80-minute program which will include a 15-minute intermission. Each evening’s performance begins at 8:30 pm.
The next stop for “Infinitely Yours” is the Sundance Film Festival & U.S. Tour.
Tickets for Infinitely Yours are $22 or $18 for REDCAT members, and all ages are welcome. The Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) is located at 631 W 2nd St, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
