Celebrate Juneteenth with Pies for Justice

This Friday marks the celebration known as Juneteenth. The 4th of July was not an independence day for all Americans. Not even the Emancipation Proclamation freed everybody. Juneteenth commemorates June 19th, 1865, when the Union Army arrived in Galveston Texas, and demanded that the last slaves of African descent finally be set free.

Gather for Good wants to take this day to honor Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, as well as countless other black men and women before them [and since – Ed.]. They will be holding their first ever online charity bake sale Friday to raise money for Black Lives Matter Los Angeles and The Gathering for Justice.

Over 50 chefs and restaurants will be donating both sweet and savory pies to the cause. Some of our favorites include The Rose Café, AOC/Lucques/Tavern, Birdie G’s, Cake Monkey Bakery, Chef Sherry Yard, Dulan’s Soul Food, Evan Kleiman, Gjusta, Hatchet Hall, Hotville Chicken, Huckleberry Café, n/naka, Rockenwagner Bakery, Rustic Canyon, Sqirl, Tartine Bakery and Valerie Echo Park.

The pie sale will be happening live starting Friday, June 19, at 9 a.m. Each pie will have its own pick-up location depending on the chef or restaurant, so be aware of the area when purchasing your pie. Pies will be available for pick-up Saturday, June 20, 2020, between 12 noon and 3 pm. You can preview the pies on their website today.
