fifty years ago I had a job on the other side of this hatch tying papers for the l.a. times using these cranker-type tying machines to get up the money to buy my first bass, a $100 kay copy sort of a gibson eb-3 from this place called “chuck’s sound of music” which was upstairs in the southeast corner of the park western plaza, right near peck park in my pedro town which is where I met d boon three years before this which was the reason I got this bass cuz I was using a guitar w/just four strings… I had only seen pictures of basses and didn’t know they had bigger strings, I thought they just had fewer of them like a tonto! man, am I a slow learner…

Indulge in Authentic Brazilian Flavors at Fogo de Chao’s Newest Location
Renowned for its authentic Brazilian dining experience, Fogo de Chao has just opened its fifth Los Angeles location.
It’s situated across from Topanga Village, an upscale, open-air shopping center that’s helped make the once-sleepy Woodland Hills area the San Fernando Valley’s newest dining destination.
Fogo de Chao is most famous for its churrasco. This culinary tradition of cooking meat over open flames began with Brazilian gauchos during the 17th century. These grilled meats – you’ll be offered around a dozen or more different types and cuts – are hand-carved tableside and served continuously at Fogo de Chao.
We got to enjoy the churrasco experience at the new location’s opening night celebration. The best cut of meat was the picanha, a flavorful filet that’s Fogo’s signature meat. Other churrasco options include filet mignon, ribs of pork or beef, lamb chops, bacon-wrapped chicken, and more.
Fogo de Chao is more than a haven for meat eaters, however. Vegetarians and carnivores alike love its Market Table. This buffet features dozens of side dishes, many of them meatless, including fresh seasonal salads, a variety of vegetables (including some exotic varieties), smoked salmon, charcuterie, soup, Fogo feijoada (a traditional black bean stew with sausage served with rice), and farofa (baked yuca flour with bacon). You’ll also find dragonfruit and other exotic fruits, cheeses like grana padano, manchego, and marinated feta, assorted olives, grilled veggies, Brazilian street corn, and more.
Listen to What is Coming Out of Australia These Days!
Some people think that Covid killed new, cool music. I keep trying to convince people that there really is great new music coming out right now! I’m not just talking about from the U.S., but the U.K., France, Spain, and so on. A lot that I’ve heard that is ear-catching lately is also coming out of Australia.
The reason I know this is that every week my co-host and I have to fill six hours of music on our radio shows, Livation, Livation AM and Livation Late on KXLU 88.9fm/kxlu.com. On good weeks we are able to scour online platforms and find a lot of the newest of the new, cool new music to fill that air time!
Of course, we throw in tracks we may already have, but we really try to aim for the new stuff. When looking on Bandcamp for what’s just come out there seems to be a good amount of music that you might think came out of 1960’s, fuzz-filled garages, mostly put out by people who’s parents were probably born after that decade. Additionally, GREAT new punk sounds are abound!
I was asked to mention here some Australian bands we like and play, you might dig ’em, too. Listed after the jump, in no particular order…

Movies Till Dawn: Beyond Belief Part 3
“Police Story 3: Supercop” (1992, 88 Films) Third entry in Jackie Chan’s long-running action-crime film series (which includes one spinoff and two reboots) is also one of its most entertaining thanks to the proliferation of eye-popping stunts and the addition of Michelle Yeoh as Chan’s on-screen partner and, in many ways, equal. Plotting is negligible – Chan’s indestructible lawman and steely Interpol inspector Yeoh (billed as Michelle Khan) crisscross Asia to stop a drug lord (Kenneth Tsang) and his lieutenant (Yuen Wah, Yeoh’s co-star in “Shang Chi”) – and matters only as framing for Chan’s extraordinary stunt choreography; fighting is lightning-fast and expertly executed, but it’s the stunts that remain the top ticket here, and include Chan hanging from a helicopter as it buzzes high over Kuala Lumpur and Yeoh’s jaw-dropping motorcycle leap onto a moving train (that Yeoh is not a trained martial artist but instead relied on her ballet talents makes these scenes even more impressive), as well as the traditional outtake reel over the end credits which show just how close the stars came to killing themselves while carrying out these setpieces. Superior Hong Kong action/Chan/Yeoh material, and required viewing for their respective/collective fans; 88 Film’s Limited Edition set includes 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs which feature both the Hong Kong version and the shorter U.S. take (titled “Supercop”), commentary by historian Frank Djeng, and interviews with Yeoh, director Stanley Tong, numerous outtakes and BTS footage, as well as international trailers and even a 1984 TV commercial with Chan and Yeoh. The set is well appointed with original cover art (by Sean Longmore), a miniposter and lobby card reproductions, and 80 pages of liner notes that include an interview with co-star John Wakefield.

Favorites from Masters of Taste: Culinary Masters
Written with Karin E. Baker
Last Sunday, the Rose Bowl’s field was dotted with white tents and picnic tables as guests spilled out of the stands to enjoy the Sixth annual Master’s of Taste food event. It was a beautiful day, and the event was well-attended, but not crowded. It was just right. The event featured the best of Los Angeles, including the best local restaurants of its host city, Pasadena. It always features the newest food trends and introduces you to new restaurants you can’t wait to try. Best of all, 100% of the proceeds from this fundraiser will directly benefit Union Station Homeless Services, a non-profit organization celebrating 50 years of providing homeless services and housing for thousands of neighbors.
This year’s Masters of Taste hosts were Chef Michael Reed his wife and co-owner, Kwini Reed. A native of Oxnard, Chef Reed is a classically trained chef with 19 years of experience. He is the co-owner and Executive Chef behind Poppy + Rose in Downtown LA, and Anaheim’s Poppy & Seed, both of which he runs with Kwini Reed, along with an upscale catering company, Root of All Food, which they founded in 2011. Kwini Reed has a degree in marketing and runs the business end of things. She is active with local nonprofits, such as Brown Bag Lady, which provides meals to people experiencing homelessness in LA. Kwini and Michael Reed will will soon open Poppy + Rose in San Pedro, offering casual brunch and a refined dinner menu.
The Host Chefs are naturally expected to bring it, and Poppy + Rose blew us out of the water with pulled pork on a crispy brick of hash browns topped with an over easy quail egg, arugula and creme fraiche.
