HIRAX at the Poor Kids Mansion with Ghoul and Cancer Christ – Live Review

Nothing says spring has sprung in Los Angeles like going to an outdoor show at the Poor Kids Mansion in Lincoln Heights. The freezing nights and the rain have given way to let some people who REALLY love music to set up a PA in a backyard of a 120-year-old, 4-story house that has been home to many beloved Angelenos. Tonight’s bill included no less than thrash legends – HIRAX! Nestled between Cancer Christ and Ghoul with SMD opening, you know with Hirax that ya got no complaints.

I’ve always been a fan of trash metal and I really feel that it has aged quite well. I saw the Big Four when it was called “Clash of the Titans” and Metallica was too busy getting ready to drop the “Black Album” on us to bother to join Anthrax, Slayer, and Megadeth in what was one of the best concerts I ever saw. I caught that tour at the El Paso County Coliseum with Alice in Chains as the opener and at one point I had lost all my friends, being that “The Barn” was completely General Admission, and I was just watching people start fires on the floor of the indoor venue. So epic! Last December, I saw Armored Saint with W.A.S.P. at The Wiltern and they just destroyed everything in their path. There was no concession for age or changes throughout time – they brought it as hard as ever with John Bush’s incredible voice as beautiful as ever and Joey Vera as powerful as ever and completely unrelenting in his attack. Pure heaven! Continue reading

The Macallan Celebrated 60 Years of James Bond at a Los Feliz Architectural Landmark

Celebrating The Macallan’s James Bond 60th Anniversary Release Launch at Sowden House. Images by Karin E. Baker for The LA Beat.

Three icons – The Macallan, James Bond, and the Sowden House – united on March 23 for an elegant black tie affair celebrating the US launch of the Scottish whisky company’s James Bond 60th Anniversary Collection.

One of LA’s most distinctive dwellings, the Sowden House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright’s son, Lloyd Wright, a talented architect in his own right. Inspired by Mayan temples, this Los Feliz showplace, completed in 1926, has been prominently featured in films like “LA Confidential” and Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator.” It’s a stylish architectural landmark worthy of this celebration of a superior whisky.

Established in 1824, The Macallan’s single malt whiskies are crafted in Scotland to this very day. The packaging for The Macallan James Bond 60th Anniversary Collection features sketches of details from various Bond films. The single-malt whisky within was created to reflect the style and character of 007.

It’s smooth sailing for THE WRINKLE ROOM’S tribute to Sean DeLear at the Zebulon Café

THE WRINKLE ROOM’S Marcus Kuiland-Nazario, Michelle Juliette Carr and Liz Garo

THE WRINKLE ROOM finally had it’s biggest event yet last Sunday night, March 26, at the Zebulon Café in Silver Lake. This particular TWR event was held to celebrate our much beloved gender bending queer, punk, performance artist and now we know, teenage diarist, Sean DeLear (aka Anthony Robertson), whose “I Could Not Believe It: The 1979 Teenage Diaries of Sean DeLear”, will be published posthumously in May by independent publisher Semiotext(e). DeLear, who was lost to us in 2017, was a powerful presence at the Zebulon, obviously not in physical form, but in the many hearts and minds of friends and others gathered who had heard of the legend.

THE WRINKLE ROOM, founded by Marcus Kuiland-Nazario, who co-produces it’s events with longtime culture creators Michelle Juliette Carr and Liz Garo, was started to center and promote artists who are 50+ years of age. There are always seats, the events start early and end early and always mobility accessible spaces. Those of other ages are always welcome, however the age was restricted to 21+ at this particular event. Adding a light touch, everyone attending had to enter through the Pill Bottle Curtain fashioned by artist Tawny Featherston – who also invited prescription pill takers to hang out at her craft table to add some dazzling gems to their own rX bottles.

Movies Till Dawn: Beyond Belief Part 2

M3GAN” (Universal Home Video) Toy designer Allison Williams (who’s fast becoming a horror star) seeks to resolve a need for companionship in her niece (Cady McGraw), who is grieving the loss of her parents, and creates the titular robot friend, a pre-teen-sized fashion plate whose artificial intelligence component takes a curious approach of no-fucks-given attitude and cold-blooded vigilantism towards potential threats. Less frightening than unnerving, Gerard Johnstone’s sci-fi thriller for Jason Blum and James Wan arrives amidst the current anxiety storm over AI self-realization (read: robot overlords) but is more concerned with delivering campy creeps (e.g. M3GAN’s utterly gonzo, much-memed dance routine) before an “Aliens”-style showdown with Williams. Satisfyingly weird and weirdly satisfying; Universal’s Blu-ray/DVD/Digital bundle offers both the unrated and theatrical cuts and a slew of making-of featurettes.
