Celebrate National Margarita Day: 4 Great Margarita Recipes

The origin of the Margarita cocktail continues to be a mystery. While one legend states that it was invented in Texas in 1948 in honor of chanteuse Peggy Lee, others assert that it was created in 1941 at Hussong’s Cantina in Ensenada, while Jose Cuervo claims the drink was invented in 1938 by a bartender in honor of a Mexican showgirl. Another story declares that the Margarita was invented in Chihuahua in 1942 by a bartender before he moved to the US to become a milkman.

Whatever the origin, the Margarita is an undisputed classic. In honor of National Margarita Day on February 22, why not create the beloved drink at home? See below for four inspired takes on the tequila-based libation.

Movies Till Dawn: “Women’s Pictures”

A Woman Kills” (1968, Radiance Films) A string of murders involving prostitutes in Paris appears to come to an end with the execution of one of their own for the crimes, but the murders continue unabated, and serve as the glue that unites Claude Merlin (the executioner) and Solange Pradel (a police officer who investigated the murders) in a complicated relationship. French drama by Jean-Denis Bonan failed to find distribution and went unseen for nearly a half-century; the film borrows freely from various genres and techniques (New Wave, documentary, exploitation, thriller) and the civil/political unrest of the May 1968 riots in Paris, all of which coalesce into an avant-garde exploration of notions of morality and justice during a time marked by upheaval and war (Merlin is a veteran profoundly affected by his time in Algeria). If “A Woman Kills” doesn’t quite deliver as a mystery, it remains visually and aesthetically entrancing and delivers a memorably offbeat final act. With a bracing free jazz score by Bernard Vitet; Radiance Films’ Blu-ray features a 2K restoration of the original 16mm elements and commentary by historians Kat Ellinger (who notes the presence of French horror director Jean Rollin in the cast) and Virgine Selavy, as well as a selection of Bonan’s early shorts (including “The Sadness of the Anthropophagi, which was banned by French censors). A 2015 documentary on Bonan and extensive liner notes round out the package. Continue reading

this was part of the safe I had welded to the deck of the boat (what I called my e350 van)… this is some other little stuff is all I got of her now… stolen last month in front of my pad and then found ten days later all tore up and ruined, a total loss decided the insurance company. ford stopped making econolines in 2014 BUT I am most grateful for buttloads of gigs/tours/miles/towns where she kept me and my men safe, for eighteen years – long live the boat!

Where to Laissez les Bons Temps Rouler in LA: Mardi Gras 2023

Second line at The LB Bayou Fest 2015 (Photo by Elise Thompson)

Traditionally, Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, is your last chance to enjoy all of the foods that are forbidden during the four-week ritual fasting of Lent. It is also your last chance to really kick up your heels. Here are the best spots around Los Angeles to let the good times roll!

Alligator Beach at Patrick Molloy’s Sports Pub – Hermosa Beach

Mardi Gras comes early to Hermosa. Come celebrate with the New Orleans blues-soul of Alligator Beach at Patrick Malloy’s Sports Pub. The free show starts at 7PM. Be forewarned…this band also plays “Groove is in the Heart” and that will be stuck in your head for days afterward.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2023

Vegan Mardi Gras at Common Space Brewery – Hawthorne

The Plant-base LA, Vegans From Mars, along with Disneyland Vegan, invite you to celebrate a free, plant-based Mardi Gras–kind of a Less-fat Tueaday. From 12 Noon until 5PM, more than 30 of the best local vendors will be bringing delicious vegan food and sweets, including pizza, tamales, and vegan sushi, as well as cruelty-free apparel, jewelry, and home goods. And what would Mardi Gras be without craft beer, a live jazz band (from 1PM – 3 PM), and beads…well “sustainable throws.” Those plastic beads ARE famously terrible for the environment. But we are so curious…
