High and Dry – Joan Jett / Poison / Def Leppard / Motley Crue at SoFi, August 27, 2022

High and Dry. Guess that’s the best way to recap the Joan Jett / Poison / Def Leppard / Motley Crue concert at SoFi Stadium. You can bring in a small sealed water bottle, and I did. And I got another small water bottle when getting tacos. Two small water bottles in nine and a half hours, because I didn’t want to miss anything while in the bathroom line. However, the edible I took kicked in real nicely.

I was so very lucky a generous friend gave me her concert tickets after my weekend plans were cancelled and was rather excited to see SoFi stadium. Seats 70,000 for concerts and 100,000 for sports. It is MASSIVE and like most colossal venues throughout time, it was built on the blood of the less fortunate. In this case off of student loan debt. Took my trusty concert buddy Su, because friends who protest and have worked on the front lines of women’s health together make excellent concert buddies. Plus, she rocks and had been to SoFi for BTS and had parking all figured out. SoFi definitely offers the full giant stadium concert experience and this tour was supposed to open it 2 years ago. But like many things it was postponed by COVID. An unlucky break for Vince Neil because I’m guessing that delayed payday is what required him to make the rather epic commercial for Dollar Loan Center. )

We arrived at our seats in time for Joan Jett. As we waited for her to go on, I texted my husband that I had made it and then got a notification from Amazon that a package arrived and quickly texted him that the shredder was here. Hmm… “The shredder is here,” kinda vague considering. Clarified that the paper shredder we ordered had been delivered.

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream. Photos by Karin E. Baker for The LA Beat.

“A life without anything good is bad” is the slogan of Van Leeuwen Ice CreamI can’t disagree with the sentiment, particularly after visiting a Van Leeuwen scoop shop to try all four of their limited-edition summer flavors.

Incredibly fresh and juicy, Vegan Strawberry Sumac Sorbet was created for Pride Month in a collaboration with Gigi Gorgeous. It gets a bit of tang from sumac spice.

Movies Till Dawn: Future Shock

Neptune Frost” (2021, Kino Lorber) Adventurous U.S.-Rwanda production taps deeply into an appealing Afrofuturist vibe to explore the perils and opportunities created by technology through striking visuals and music. A joint effort between Saul Williams and Rwandan filmmaker Anisia Uzeyman, “Neptune” is in part a story about two lost souls – intersex fugitive Neptune (Cheryl Isheja and Elvis Ngabo) and miner Matalusa (Bertrand “Kaya Free” Ninteretse), who works in virtual slavery digging up coltan (which fuels our cell phones) – whose romantic/spiritual/technological connection fuels a hacker collective’s efforts to free the general population from a repressive regime known as the Authority. The characters’ fluid identities, which transcend notions of gender, sexuality, and even physical boundaries, is echoed in Williams and Uzeyman’s aesthetic, which flows freely from rough-hewn punk musical to freeform experimental narrative. It’s a unique and liberating concept of the future, one in which the notion of freedom extends beyond concept to become a palpable and desirable physical and emotional state; having issued “Neptune” through a Stateside theatrical release, Kino brings the film to Blu-ray with informative commentary by the filmmakers and six minutes of deleted scenes.

East LA Meets Napa 2022 Was a Night to Remember

ELA Meets Napa 2022. Photo by Elise Thompson.

Delectable scents emanated from gourmet dishes offered by 15 top Latino-owned Los Angeles-area restaurants while wine from 15 acclaimed Napa Valley vintners flowed. Joined with live music from LA’s own Ozomatli, the return of East LA Meets Napa made for a summer evening to remember.

Hundreds of patrons visited LA Live in Downtown Los Angeles on July 29 for East LA Meets Napa, a celebration of the richness and diversity of LA’s Latino-influenced cuisine and California’s Latino-owned wineries.

Now in its 15th year, East LA Meets Napa is the premier fundraiser for AltaMed Health Services, a local organization that helps bring healthcare to underserved LA and OC residents.

Michelin-starred chef Rocio Comacho, known as the “goddess of moles” and owner of Rocio’s Mexican Kitchen in Bell Gardens, shared her empanadas stuffed with chicken and topped with mole negro. They paired well with the refreshing Cucumber Margarita made with tequila, Cointreau, agave nectar, fresh cucumbers, lime, and chili bitters from the Aguila Real Tequila booth.
